An Introduction
India is aptly described as a land of striking contrasts. Cities in India have witnessed many cultures in its past. One can easily trace the origins and remains of the varied communities on the streets of these vibrant cities. Street is a culture that embodies a manoeuvre and community that celebrates the diversity, creativity, honesty and discipline. In this series 'Orders and Disorders: The Life of a Street' these peculiar characteristics of Indian streets have been shown.
In the first article ‘Commotion and Quiescence: A morning trance of street-life in North-East district of Delhi’, Vivek Tripathi explores the ways streets depict the lifestyle of people. Given the available resources and facilities people find their way of living and adapt to their settings. The camera zooms into various activities of streets of a colony in North-east district of Delhi.
In the next two articles ‘Mapping Everyday Spaces: A Tale of "three" Markets’, by Rishika Mukhopadhyay and “A Piquant Exposure of "Chhota Bazaar" Street Market at Shahdara” by Pratibha Tomar, the varied Streetscapes of what makes an Indian bazaar have been depicted. These two articles present how streets become a cultural hub through the daily and weekly market(Bazaar).
Indian bazaars are perhaps the best sensory guides to the diverse culture of public life of India. These articles bring us to the smells, colours, a sense of organised chaos and the fresh vying for the attention to the ‘new’ and the ‘old’which reside in these bazaars(street markets).
